What you are paying for
The retainer covers named developers, a lead who runs the week, the design and testing time around them, and the reporting you receive. Ask for the list. A price that only names developers leaves project management and quality to chance, and both arrive later as extra invoices.
What moves the price
Seniority, the number of people, the mix of skills and the length of the commitment set the monthly figure. A three-month minimum with a notice period costs less per month than a rolling arrangement. Specialist skills such as finance systems or automation carry their own rates.
Compare it with a fixed-scope quote
A fixed-scope project prices an outcome: stages, dates and a total. A dedicated team prices capacity: people per month. Choose the project when the scope is clear and finite. Choose the team when the product keeps evolving and you want the same people to stay with it.
Count the costs that are not on the invoice
Your own time in reviews, the tools the team needs in your accounts, and the handover if you ever change partners. A team that commits into your repositories, documents as it goes and sends a written weekly update keeps all three small.
How to ask for a quote
Send the product, the roles you expect, the hours you need covered and the start date. Ask for the monthly figure in your currency, the notice period, what is included and who the lead is. A written answer to all five is the first test of the partner.
